Born in 1933 in Medan, North Sumatra, Amrus Natalsya graduated from the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts, Yogyakarta in 1962. In 1961, together with Sutopo and others, he founded the Sanggar Bumi Tarung in Yogyakarta. He was a member of LEKRA / People's Cultural Institute, and in the communist purge that followed the abortive coup of October 1965, he was imprisoned and banned from major exhibitions. After his release from the prison, his works take on a decorative quality, like "House on a Hill" here. The stylized motifs stand out in relief.
