Single Object

Born in 1957 in Solo, Central Java, Anusapati studied at the lnstitut Seni Indonesia and is a Fulbright Scholar at the School of Art and Design, Pratt Institute, in New York from 1988 to 1990. “Single Object” is made from the wood of the indigenous durian tree. The rounded and self-contained solidness of its form is punctuated by a narrow slit that runs parallel length-down, permitting a view of its hollowed interior, while soft chisel marks lend a delicate texture to the work. Its form reminds one of the wooden kentongan gong, still used in rural Indonesian communities. Appealing for traditional objects in aesthetics, what has been called ‘low art’ objects - humble items that have traditionally not been awarded the status of art under the fine arts paradigm - Anusapati's works manifest the current pluralist attitude of contemporary Indonesian art.
