Born in Hanoi, Tran Luong (b.1960) graduated from Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 1983. Together with Ha Tri Hieu, Pham Quang Vinh, Hong Viet Dung and Dang Xuan Hoa, they are collectively known as the Hanoi ‘Gang of Five’. Luong’s inspiration stems from his childhood staying in the countryside. After his residency in New York in 1996, Luong decided to venture into the field of installation and performance art, as a refusal to be commercialized. Now, Luong travels extensively, participating in international workshops and exchanges, obtaining support for his curatorial projects.Luong’s fascination with life in the ponds and padi fields form the main inspiration of his paintings. The recurring motif of the eye that alludes to the caring and kind-hearted villagers who rendered assistance to him and other children during the war, is again evident in this work.
