Born in Bandung, Sudjana Kerton’s (1922 – 1994) work shows a deep concern for the common people in Indonesia, particularly the farmers. His works are exhibited in Sono Budoyo Museum, Yogyakarta and other cities throughout Java. He left Indonesia after the war for studies in Holland and the United States, returning to Bandung after 20 years in New York. Here, the men are arranged in a tight composition around a woman serving drinks in the center of the work. Deliberately simplified and distorted with comic effect, the men are eyeing the woman with lust in their eyes while she flirts with a man behind her. The lone stall in distance suggests the abandonment by the stall owner, who only wants enjoyment.
