This 'ruyi'-shaped sceptre has a head in the form of a lingzhi fungus and a shaft comprising stylised bat and angular scroll motifs. Panels of cloisonné enamels depicting red bats and the 'shou' (symbol of happiness and longevity) character, decorate the head and the shaft.The ruyi sceptre was a symbol of power, blessing and good fortune in ancient Chinese tradition, as the term 'ruyi' signifies 'as you wish'. It was often presented as a gift to convey one's well wishes.The lingzhi fungus symbolises longevity. The ruyi, which also looks like the lingzhi fungus, is is a symbol for granting wishes and is homophonous for the expression, "as you wish". This expression is used to wish others good fortune and hope their wishes will come true.
