Born in Hanoi, Bui Suoi Hoa (B.1957) studied under Tran Luu Hau in Hanoi College of Fine Arts where she graduated in 1985. Currently living and working in Ho Chi Minh City, Hoa participated in the groundbreaking exhibition ‘Uncorked Soul’ in Hong Kong in 1991, along with Dang Xuan Hoa and other major Vietnamese artists. Since 1976, she has been exhibiting in Vietnam and internationally in the United Kingdom and France. The asymmetrical treatment of architectural forms is very much a characteristic of Hoa’s art. Working primarily in oil, her impasto works are composed of bold, swirling and rhythmic brushwork in a Fauvist manner. Her early works, of which this painting is an example, are more earthy and sombre in colour than her later works in which she developed a more pastel palette.
