Gateway

This gateway made of pink sand stone, is a fine example of the synthesis of Islamic and indigenous Hindu architecture traditions. There are two arches arranged one in front of the other, with the cusped arch held together by two floral piers and a lintel made from several blocks of stone. It dates probably from late 17th to early 18th century and is from the North Indian region of Vraja inUttar Pradesh. This facade style developed in the post Shah Jahan period architecture. It is interesting to note that this gateway is decorated with three different types of ‘guldasta’ motif, which refers to the motif of flower vases with floral stalks emerging from it.
