Founded in 1893, the Singapore Swimming Club was restricted to only Europeans until 1963. A swimming pool and a clubhouse, as shown in the photograph, were built in 1931 at Tanjong Rhu. However, the swimming area in front of the club had to be encircled with steel fences as the waters off Tanjong Rhu were shark-infested. The Singapore Swimming Club was shifted inland after the government carried out reclamation works at the East Coast in the 1970s.
