A shophouse is a vernacular architectural building type that is both native and unique to urban Southeast Asia. This hybrid building form characterises the historical centres of most towns and cities in the region and is still seen today in Singapore. Seen here is an arcaded covered walk, called the “five-foot way”, that runs along the front of almost all commercial buildings offering shelter from the effects of the weather.
