This is a large, slip-decorated hexagonal storage jar made from stone or earthernware. Each panel depicts different forms of decorative motifs. These include bamboo plants and a bird in flight among others. Bamboo is an auspicious symbol for longevity in the Chinese culture. These jars could be used to store staples such as rice and water and were used by the Peranakan Chinese in their kitchens. The contents were kept cool and safe from rodents and other pests, especially when covered with a wooden lid and raised off the ground with a stand. The Peranakan Chinese were fond of purchasing household objects from a variety of sources. Many families used similar items in their kitchens as these were often sold by similar hawkers, who sought out wealthy Peranakan ladies to ply their imported wares.
