The North Korean film, ‘A Flower Girl’, was adapted from a revolutionary genre theatrical performance, supposedly written by Kim Il-Sung, North Korea’s first premier. The play was regarded in North Korea as one of the Five Great Revolutionary Operas. The story was set in the 1930s and was based on the anti-Japanese guerrilla movement during the Japanese Occupation in Korea. It revolves around the plight of a poor rural girl, who supports her family by selling flowers, and her brother, a volunteer of the Revolutionary Army, who ultimately overthrows the villainous landlord with the support of the other villagers.
