‘International Screen’ was the official publication of Cathay Organisation. It was launched to promote Cathay’s artistes and films to audiences in Asia.Cathay Organisation was established in 1935 by Dato Loke Wan Tho and his mother, Mrs. Loke Cheng Kim as Associated Theatres Ltd. In 1956, Cathay’s Chinese films subsidiary, Motion Picture & General Investment (MP&GI), later renamed Cathay Organisation (Hong Kong), was formed. Some popular stars in the company include Ge Lan (also known as Grace Chang), Peter Chen Ho and Betty Loh Ti, who were propelled to stardom through custom-made roles. MP&GI was well known for its series of urban romance and musicals which were modelled on Hollywood movies and emphasised the theme of modernity. Most of these films were based on scripts written by the famous novelist Eileen Chang, and clinched many awards at regional film festivals.
