Marble screen in Rang Mahal of the Red Fort

The Rang Mahal, also known as the Painted Palace, is a pavilion inside the Red Fort. It consists of a main hall with an arched entrance and vaulted side chambers. The most outstanding feature is the ‘jali’ (inlaid marble screen), which shows the sun, moon, and stars, as well as the scales of justice. The Red Fort is a fort complex constructed by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in Old Delhi, the capital of the Mughals. After the end of the Mughal Empire, the British used the fort as a military camp until India’s independence in 1947. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, and now serves as a popular tourist site and symbol of India’s sovereignty. This picture was taken by a British policeman during his tour in India. He was posted to Singapore during the Malayan Emergency.
