Also known as the 'hong dou shan', this antique, sturdy scroll pot has been carved to resemble a section of a gnarled tree trunk. Its interior has been hollowed out to contain rolls of paper or handscrolls.Furnishings created in naturalistic forms were appreciated by the literati for the evocation of nature, which they loved. While objects of art adapted from nature with minimum tampering were perhaps the most valued by the Qing literati, items made in imitation nature were also important among their repertoire of scholarly trappings.
