Born in 1954 in Singapore, potter Jessie Lim started her formal pottery studies in 1982 at Dartmouth College, followed by courses in New York City, at Rhode Island School of Design and at Anderson Ranch Centre, USA. In 1988, Lim was the first local woman potter to stage a solo exhibition held at the then National Museum Art Gallery, Singapore. In 2000, the Singapore Art Museum made their first acquisition of Lim’s work for their permanent collection. It was also in 2000 that Lim ventured into totemic forms which exemplify her experimentations with decoration, texture and sculptural non-functional form. The pinnacles and spires are echoes of time spent surrounded by the Rocky Mountains at Anderson Ranch Centre, and cultivating a domestic garden.
