Just Another Dharma

Born in 1966 in Singapore, Jason Lim holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from Central St Martins College of Art and Design, UK (1992) and a Master of Fine Art from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia (2003). Lim is a trained ceramicist but is also known for his installation and performance art. A participant in more than 50 group and solo shows, he was one of four artists who represented Singapore at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007.In ’Just Another Dharma’, about 1700 pieces of press-moulded porcelain pieces of tear-shaped petals form a lotus-inspired chandelier to symbolize “an architectural construct of prayers”. This installation illustrates the invocation of one’s desires and wishes, which when interpreted with the concept of dharma (the fundamental principle of the order of nature and existence) reveals the dual attributes of ‘hope’. Hope binds the hopeful to a dilemma where delight and despair are interchangeable — the very nature of the human condition.
