In a traditional Malay ‘kampong’ (village), besides tending to domestic chores, women were also expected to help out in the daily routines associated with agricultural life. This involvement in occupational activities afforded women a certain degree of independence, and some were directly involved in the growing of crops and their sale at the marketplace.
