This pumpkin-shaped box is made from a bamboo core, which is strengthened by a mixture of clay and lacquer applied in layers. The final coat of fine quality lacquer gives the characteristic black colour of lacquer. It has been suggested that such pumpkin-shaped receptacle was used for gift exchanges between the families of the bride and groom. Lacquerware included a wide range of utensils including water vessels, cosmetic containers, flower vases, food storage and eating utensils. It also served a variety of important religious functions, from preserving Buddhist manuscripts, to the presentation of food to the monastery.
