Pekalongan batik cloths like this example, were distinctive for their bright colours and large floral bouquet motifs. Hybrid Chinese-indigenous communities along the northern coast of Java—a region known as the ‘Pasisir’—have long been heavily involved in the production of batik textiles. Each of the pasisir towns of Cirebon, Lasem and Pekalongan became well-known for their own styles. Pekalongan-style batik was heavily influenced by Indo-European aesthetics of the mixed Dutch-Indonesian community. They were more brightly coloured than other types and became brighter and more densely designed as time passed.
