This print (wood engraving) shows the opening of the third dock in New Harbour (renamed Keppel Harbour in 1900). Built by the Tanjang Pagar Dock Company, it was opened by Governor Sir Harry St. George Ord on 17 October 1868 and named Victoria Dock. The granite graving dock was built to allow the entry of large steamers and was adjoined to workshops under the charge of European engineers. At the opening, the governor and his entourage arrived at the dock in two government steamers. After giving a speech, Governor Ord declared the dock formally open, and the opening day was also declared a public holiday. This engraving was published in the ‘Illustrated London News’.
