The design of this antique 'long yan mu' stand incorporates features which are characteristic of Fujian furniture. The cabriole legs has pointed hoof feet and elongated ogival openings along the narrow waist of the stand. Low stands were frequently used to elevate precious objects.Stands were produced in Fujian to display the numerous objects of art also made in the region. Beyond Fujian, they have also been a common feature in the homes of the Chinese literati. The fine details integrated into the design of this stand highlight how utilitarian objects could be appreciated as works of art in themselves. By the late Ming dynasty, it had become important for the literati to be educated in the correct use and placement of various scholarly objects.
