This betel box, known as kun-it, is fitted with two trays, with a lid decorated with a figure standing within a gateway. A mixture of clay and lacquer applied in layers strengthens the bamboo core, and a final coat of fine quality lacquer produces the characteristic black colour of the background. The designs were engraved, and filled with colourants. Betel nut was offered to guests, and was a token of favour to an admirer or from one’s superior. Hence the betel box was essential as an item of hospitality in homes.
