Skirtcloth

One of the oldest of batik motifs, the parang consists of diagonal arrangements of S-shaped patterns. A popular theory for the design’s origin is that it was inspired by waves crashing against rocks, interpreted as a symbol of perseverance. Some variations of the parang were considered to be “forbidden patterns” (pola larangan) reserved for use by Javanese royalty. This variation, parang rusak Sri Sadono latar putih, was designed by Gok Tik Swan Panembahan Hardjonagoro — the eighth generation of a family of Chinese batik makers from Solo and one of Indonesia’s most respected designers. Batik is a resist-dye technique used to pattern plain fabrics. Patterns and motifs are either hand drawn (tulis) or stamped (cap) with molten wax onto white cotton cloth to prevent colour dyes from being absorbed. This process is repeated for each colour.
