This globular 'sancai' ('three-coloured ware') earthenware jar has a light cream lead glaze with a greenish tone applied over a thin layer of white slip (liquid clay) visible just above the foot. The three-colour technique grew out of the monochrome lead glazes of the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220CE). This type of glaze includes various shades of brown, blue, green and cream which were combined or used on their own.
