This instrument is known as a 'rebana' or a tambourine used in Malay folkmusic.The term is also used for several types of drums played in Islamic devotional music such as zikir, and other types of traditional Malay music. The sound is reminiscent of the Middle Eastern tanbour and is often used to keep the rhythm similar to the tanbour in Middle Eastern music.In the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, the term 'rebana' is used also for frame drums. Frame drums are circular with only one face covered with goatskin. It comes in various sizes.
