Born in 1923 in Ireland, Brother Joseph McNally was an important arts leader and educator who helped to develop arts education in Singapore; he founded the LASALLE College of the Arts in 1984. He was also an artist and a sculptor, and had at least six solo exhibitions and participated in more than 10 group exhibitions in Singapore and other cities around the world including Dublin, Castletown and Galway in Ireland, New York, Bermuda, Penang, and Fukuoka. For his many significant contributions to local arts and education, he was honoured with many awards and accolades over the decades, among which was the Meritorious Service Medal in 1997 from Singapore. He passed away in 2002 while on a visit home to Ireland.McNally’s sculptural works are often inspired by various mythology, religion and cultural practice from both his native Ireland and Singapore. He was adept at working with different materials such as wood, glass; the organic form ‘Untitled’ is made of bronze.
