This embroidered sash with streamers is worn by a Yao woman. Embroidered clothing is an essential part the the Yao's cultural identity. Women embroider colourful geometric patterns on their garments and accessories while young Yao girls are taught to embroider from the age of five or six. Appliquéd designs also appear on aprons, shoes and other accessories. The Mien or Yao as they are often called, were originially highlanders from southern China who migrated during the mid 19th century from Laos to Thailand.
