The figure is a small carving of a woman working on a backstrap loom. While relatively simple and crude the carving illustrates very well the process of backstrap loom weaving. Most weaving households on Sumba Island would have one of these small stone carvings on display. There are subtle motifs etched into the textile being woven on the loom, including images of a rooster and possibly a dragon.
