Born in 1954 in Singapore, potter Jessie Lim started her formal pottery studies in 1982 at Dartmouth College, followed by courses in New York City, at Rhode Island School of Design and at Anderson Ranch Centre, USA. In 1988, Lim was the first local woman potter to stage a solo exhibition held at the then National Museum Art Gallery, Singapore. In 2000, the Singapore Art Museum made their first acquisition of Lim’s work for their permanent collection. In 1998 Lim returned from nearly three years in Beijing where she had continued her potting. Her vessels made during this time and over the two to three years following her return are characterised by sturdy hand-built forms and textures, and the use of cobalt colouring, possibly referencing the Chinese pots Lim collected during her stay in China. This work was included in the ‘Jessie Lim 2000’ exhibition held at Art-2 Gallery, Singapore.
