Marriage between Malay royal houses was the norm during the early 20th century. Wedding ceremonies were always carried out with much pomp and grandeur, lasting all of 40 days and 40 nights - as required by tradition - before culminating in the bersanding, a ceremony that had the couple sitting on an elaborate and symbolically decorated dais.
