This photograph shows Armenian Street decorated with a celebratory welcome arch by the Chinese community during the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. Originally known as Armenian Church Street after St. Gregory’s Church, the oldest church in Singapore, it was shortened to Armenian Street sometime during the 1840s. Despite its name, few Armenians resided and conducted business along this street, except for the Armenian George Michael who opened Wilson & Co., a photography studio at the junction of Armenian Street and Stamford Road in the early 1900s.
