Sultan Ibrahim succeeded his father, Sultan Abu Bakar, in 1895. An Anglophile, Sultan Ibrahim shared an amiable relationship with the British. However, his inclination towards everything English did not make him a popular figure on the domestic front, in particular within the nationalist United Malays National Organisation, or more widely known as UMNO.
