Buckle

This is a ‘pending’, a buckle, which was worn to fasten a belt. They were made in various shapes with the ogival shape being the most popular. ‘Pending’ were mostly decorated with floral and vegetal motifs. Gold ‘pending’, richly decorated in repoussé work and valuable gemstones were worn by the nobility or high-ranking individuals.Various metalworking techniques were used to produce a variety of aesthetic effects on metal objects as demonstrated in this ‘pending’. These techniques include repoussé, chasing, niello, wire filigree and faceted granulation.
