Tobacco box

The cover of this ornate box is decorated with a foliage design in repoussé technique. Tobacco boxes come in various sizes and shapes. Smoking tobacco, like chewing betelnut, has long been integrated into traditional social ritual customs of Southeast Asia. It was offered as a token of hospitality to friends and guests. On ceremonial occasions, tobacco was indispensable the vessels to hold tobacco leaves provided an opportunity to display one's wealth and status.
